Orthodontic treatment can give you the straight and beautiful smile you deserve. However, that’s only true if you take good care of your smile and braces while you are aligning your teeth. So, please do all you can to keep your teeth and appliance in tip-top shape. To help you do so, our Smile at the World Orthodontics orthodontic team encourages you to follow our tips.

First, make sure to keep up on oral hygiene. This is vital because if you don’t, harmful particles, like food and plaque, can get trapped in the small spaces of your appliance and teeth and can cause tooth decay, enamel stains, and even gum disease. So, make sure you brush twice a day and floss your smile after each meal and snack. For the best results possible, we also recommend rinsing your mouth with a beneficial mouthwash daily.

Second, avoid eating foods that can harm your appliance. During treatment, it’s best to avoid eating sugary, starchy, chewy, and sticky foods. The sugary and starchy foods tend to cling to the teeth and cause cavities while the chewy and sticky foods tend to break your brackets and wires.

Third, wear a mouthguard when you play high-contact sports and activities. These appliances are very beneficial because they can protect your teeth and braces from any hard, forceful object that hits them, reducing your chances of knocking out a tooth, injuring your tongue, or breaking your braces. So, do your best to wear a mouthguard while you are active.

If you do these things, you’ll remain on the right track toward your perfect smile.
