Having bad breath is common when you have braces. This is because food particles tend to get trapped in the wires, brackets, and bands of your appliance. When this happens, they promote bad breath as long as they are in your mouth. To prevent this from happening, or to eliminate your bad breath when it does happen, our Smile at the World Orthodontics orthodontic team encourages you to do the following things:

-Brush your teeth: We recommend brushing your teeth after each meal and snack. Brushing will help you remove the food particles that get stuck between the appliance and your teeth. If you brush with minty toothpaste that contains fluoride, you will also have fresher breath along with a cleaner smile. All you need to do is clean your tongue when you’re done.

-Floss your smile: Flossing also helps with bad breath because it cleans the hard-to-reach areas of your mouth that your toothbrush couldn’t scrub. This will help remove the mysterious food particles that are causing bad breath but are hard to find. Make sure you floss after each meal and snack as well.

-Use mouthwash: Mouthwash will clean your smile and kill the bacteria that are causing the bad breath. Try rinsing at least once a day with a beneficial mouthwash that your dentist or orthodontist recommends.
