Your oral health is a crucial part of a confident smile. What does this mean for you? Taking the time to practice good oral hygiene habits every day, and keeping routine checkups and cleanings. The goal? To keep tooth decay and gum disease away. When you are aligning your smile with braces, your oral health is even more crucial.

Smile at the World Orthodontics appreciates our patients who are straightening their smiles in Temple, Texas and the surrounding communities. While wearing aligners, cleaning is as simple as brushing and flossing your pearly whites as usual. With wires and brackets, however, you want to make sure you keep food particles and plaque away to avoid damage to tooth enamel.

Dr. Joshua Knowles and our team are pleased to share just a few tips today on keeping your teeth in top notch condition while aligning your smile:

1- Are you wearing elastics? If so, be sure to remove them before you begin cleaning your teeth.

2- Next, you will want to brush your pearly whites with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Hold your brush at a 45-degree angle against your gums and gently clean the gum line using tiny circular strokes. Fluoride toothpaste is often recommended as it helps your teeth resist acids from food and drinks, as well as replacing minerals.

3- Next, brush each tooth carefully along with your braces. Thoroughly clean the gaps between the wire and each tooth, as well as under the wires. Patients have found a powered toothbrush effective, instead of a manual one.

4- Make sure to clean the inside and outside surface areas of each tooth, and remember to use circular strokes as you go. With the molars, you can brush back and forth.

5- Don’t forget to floss! Oral irrigators are effective tools for thoroughly flossing your chompers.

6- After cleaning your teeth, replace your elastic.

7- And finally, avoid acidic foods and beverages that can harm your teeth, and hard foods or sticky foods that can harm your brackets and wires. This means no gum or ice chewing.

Caring for your pearly whites is always important, especially while aligning your smile in Temple, Texas. If you have any questions or concerns or to like to schedule a visit with Dr. Joshua Knowles, please call us at 254-773-8028 today!
