Treatment

How should I decide whether to get orthodontic treatment?

Young patients are usually referred to our office by their pediatric or general dentist. As an adult, a simple question is, "Do I like my smile?". Orthodontic treatment has changed the lives of many adult patients. Healthy teeth can be moved at any age so it is never too late for braces. A revolutionary new way to straighten teeth without braces is Invisalign. Invisalign treatment is comfortable and removable! Regardless of age, orthodontic treatment is one of the best investments you can make in yourself or your child's future.

At what age should treatment begin?

In the majority of cases, the best time to begin orthodontic treatment is when the patient is actively growing and the jaws are developing most rapidly, usually in the early adolescent years from age 7-10. However, in certain cases, improper skeletal position of the face and jaws should be corrected as soon as they are recognized, which can be as young as age four. Such treatment may reduce the severity of the problem and minimize or even eliminate the need for comprehensive treatment at a later date. Remember, each patient's needs are unique, and the length and type of treatment can be determined only after a complete evaluation.

What about treatment for adults?

An increasing percentage of our practice deals with the treatment of adults. Crooked teeth, improper bite, crowding, and underlying improper skeletal positions are now being corrected in many people, regardless of age. The latest dental technology, including Invisalign has made orthodontic treatment easier and more effective than ever for adults.

How long will treatment last?

Each patient's treatment plan is specialized for his or her orthodontic condition; therefore, there is not a "set" or standard treatment time. Orthodontics involves multiple gradual movements, so a little patience is required. However, new advances in technology have greatly reduced treatment time with fewer necessary office visits and adjustments. Patients are experiencing better results with greater comfort.

Patient cooperation is essential to the overall success of treatment. It is important to keep regularly scheduled appointments, wear appliances as prescribed, and keep teeth extra clean. With a little team work, the end result will be a beautiful, healthy smile!

What should I expect on my first visit?

Your initial examination will last about one hour. During your visit, you will meet with Connie, our Treatment Coordinator, and Dr. Barron. You will be given a brief tour of the office, where you can observe treatment being performed in the patient treatment area. With your permission, a panoramic x-ray will be taken that will aid Dr. Barron in diagnosis and assist him in determining a treatment plan.

During the examination, Dr. Barron will determine the occlusion (bite), the relationship between the teeth and skeletal structure, and the overall dental condition of the patient. Dr. Barron will discuss preliminary treatment options and answer any questions that you may have. Connie will explain treatment costs and financial details.

We try to ensure that the following topics are discussed during your initial examination:

  • Are you or your child a candidate for orthodontic treatment?
  • Should treatment begin immediately or be delayed until adult teeth erupt?
  • What treatment procedures will be used to make the needed correction?
  • Will any teeth need to be extracted?
  • What is the length of treatment?
  • What will treatment cost?
  • What are the financing options?

We know that orthodontic treatment is a major decision. We want to make sure that you are comfortable with your decision and confident in our ability to provide the finest quality care.

What are my financing options?

Treatment fees will be discussed as part of your initial examination. Our office is very proud to offer many financial options and payment plans designed to meet individual needs and budgets. Connie, our Treatment Coordinator, will provide a list for you detailing each option. As a courtesy to our patients, we file all orthodontic insurance. We want to make your treatment as easy as possible. One way for us to help is to deal with the insurance hassles and headaches.

In addition to the payment options offered by our office, financing can be obtained through OFP (Orthodontists Fee Plan). OFP, a company that specializes in orthodontic financing, has made orthodontic treatment available to thousands of patients.
